Nagano Walking

An interval walking timer for iPhone, for the Japanese interval walking method developed at Shinshu University in Nagano Prefecture: alternate a few minutes of slow walking with a few minutes of fast walking, and let the app tell you when to switch — through your earbuds, over your podcast, with the phone locked in your pocket.

Common questions

I don't hear the cues.
Cues play at the media volume, not the ringer volume, so turn the volume up while the app is open; the Ring/Silent switch does not affect them. The Walk screen warns you if the media volume is off. Use the ▶ buttons in Settings → Cue sounds to hear every cue right away.
Does it work with the screen locked or while I listen to something else?
Yes. That is the point of the app. Cues briefly lower your music or podcast, play, and let it resume. Pausing the walk releases the audio session; resume from the Walk screen.
What are the lock-screen banners, and can I decline them?
The first time you start a walk, iOS asks whether the app may show notifications. Allowing it adds a silent "Walk fast" / "Walk slow" banner to the lock screen at each pace change. Declining changes nothing else — the sound cues do not depend on it.
How long is the free trial?
14 days or 10 completed walks (a walk counts once it has run five minutes), whichever comes first. The remaining trial is always shown on the Home screen. After that, starting a walk needs the one-time Lifetime Unlock. The trial record survives deleting and reinstalling the app by design.
I bought the unlock on another iPhone.
Settings → Purchase → Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account.
Can I change the intervals?
Settings → Intervals: slow and fast each from 1:00 to 10:00 in 30-second steps. Sessions run 15 to 90 minutes. Changes apply to the next walk.
Is there an Apple Watch app?
Not yet. It is the first thing planned after launch. A paired Apple Watch already mirrors the lock-screen banners while the iPhone is locked.
